Hungarian Breadseed
The Hungarian Breadseed poppy is a flower that has been developed over time not for its beautiful flowers, but for its large capsules that contain thousands of black seeds. This poppy is famous Hungarian and European Bakers were making poppy seed cake poppy yeast breads.
This poppy that has been developed to have large pods of seeds, it is tolerant of cold temperatures and has white or pale lavender flowers that have a sheen to their color. In the garden this plant will grow between three and 4 feet tall, with foliage of blue green leaves that are tooth edged. Planting of the seeds can be done in late fall or very early spring and will bloom during spring and summer.
Seeds are planted in the fall will germinate as the ground begins to thaw and will be very hearty. Sewing the seeds, the gardener should sprinkle them as thinly as possible in well turned soil that has full sun. It should be sown in rows that are 8 to 10 inches apart in well draining soil.
