Buying Poppies For The Garden
When planning a garden with the use of poppies there are many species to choose from that will grow in most areas as long as they have the proper soil conditions including proper drainage. Even species that are not native to an area can be grown in that location with the proper conditions, this includes the use of sprinklers if it is a poppy native to a cooler climate that is planted in a warm or hot climate.
Poppy seeds can be purchased at garden centers and from catalogs or on Internet websites, where there is a large variety of the different species available. One poppy seed that will not be found at any of these is the Papaver somniferum or the opium poppy. Among the poppy seeds available it is possible to have a flowering garden of no other flowers from ground cover to the tallest plant in the garden and in a wide range of colors. Poppies can be found in colors of white, yellow, peach, orange, reds, blue and even a deep purple. They can be found in different textures with some having petals as thin as paper and others having a thicker petal, there are species with four petals, six petals and poppies that resemble carnations with many petals.
The Papaver family has plants that grow in inches or in feet with 2 inches being the smallest and ten feet being the largest of this family. There are many that grow from 12 to 15 inches in height and others that grow from 24 to 36 inches tall. |
