The Drying of Poppies and Poppy Pods

Many people enjoy dried poppies and their pods for use as home décor, and the dried flowers can be purchased or they can be taken from the garden and hung to dry. Dried poppy pods can be purchased and used in home accents along with other dried flowers or alone as they have a unique look.

Poppies can be grown in the garden in every color of the rainbow, in deep hues and in pastels of whites, yellows, pinks, purples, blues, orange and reds. To dry them it will take a warm dry place that has air flow, such as an attic, a garage or a potting shed. After the flowers are cut they should be bundled in 6 to 10 flowers, holding them upside down by the stem they should be tied with string, twine or even a rubber band. Then they are hung with the blooms hanging down and are completely dry when the stems snap easily. If it is not possible to hang the flowers they can be stood in their tied bundles in a coffee can or jar.

It is also possible to dry poppy flowers in a microwave, a test must be done as each microwave is different, but as a general rule it takes approximately two minutes on high to begin testing.

Flowers that are dried will keep their color and when pods are dried they will have a wood or paper look and feel to them.
