Dusky Rose
The Dusky Rose poppy is a member of the Eschscholtzia californica species, with deep rose blooms that have an iridescent sheen. This member of the poppy family grows between 12 and 15 inches in height and will bloom in early spring.
They are a flower that likes warmer climates and could be a challenge for the gardener in cold climates. In climates that have a warmer winter the seeds can be planted in the fall and are able to handle a light frost, since they are a poppy native to California this is the type of climate they will do best. When planted in a colder climate they will need full sunlight and should not be planted until April after the dangers of heavy frost. They are also one of the Papaver family that can grow heartily in poor soil conditions as long as there is proper drainage making them a flower that can easily cover hillsides. They do not require fertilizing unless they are planted in extremely poor soil, making them an easy poppy for any gardener.
The blooms are a dusty rose, which has an iridescent sheen on paper thin petals and in the right sun light and soil conditions will bloom from early spring until fall, in colder climates they will flower throughout the summer. This poppy has a slender stem and fern like foliage that is a gray green in color, giving this flower a delicate, but fancy appearance. |
