Poppy First Aid Salve

The poppy has long been used to relieve all types of medical problems and there is a salve that has been made using the prickly poppy. While other poppies could have been used to make this type of mixture for treating skin conditions the prickly poppy was most likely the species of poppy that was native to the area where this began being made.

This salve was a first aide type of herbal product to go along with the other tonics and remedies the poppy was used for in treating ailments, just as other folk lore medicinal’s. Because of the properties contained in the seeds of the poppy it is possible this type of mixture would have worked. Just as the second pressing of the seeds for oil is used in liniments today.

This was made by using a double boiler pan, and a combination of approximately 6 tablespoons of petroleum jelly with crushed poppy seeds. This mixture was mixed well and melted over the heat, it was kept simmering for one hour.

During this time it must be watched in order to ad water when needed, as the double boiler pan should never go dry. The homemade mixture was then strained through a cloth and into a container, where it would keep for an extended amount of time.

This mixture was then used as a remedy for a variety of ailments such as burns and itching, hemorrhoids and other skin conditions.
