This poem was popular with many people but two women were credited with making this poem one of the most famous in history when they used this poem literally to begin the use of poppies for Remembrance Day. With the use of this poem they found such success in their campaign and it still holds true today in the sales of the artificial poppy and the Red Poppy Coin in honoring the men and women that served during World War I. This is all attributed to the poem written by McCrae as his way of honoring the men and women that paid the ultimate price from Canada and other countries.
The title of his poem came from one of the most notable battles during World War I, it was the second battle which was the Battle of Ypres, at the location in Europe that is known as Flanders field. The lieutenant colonel McCrea wrote his poem after the loss of a solider he knew in Flanders Field during the battle. Whether he realized while writing the poem, that the bloom of the poppy lasts only a short time, just as the life of this young soldier.
