Flemish Antique
The poppy Flemish Antique is an old fashioned poppy and has blooms that resemble the peony, it is from the genus Papaver somniferum and a variety of the breadseed poppy. It has blooms that have the appearance they are from the Victorian period that are an elegant bloom reaching 4 to 5 inches across and are full doubles. They can be found in cream with streaks of crimson, pink or maroon in their petals and as the flower matures the color spreads. This poppy is grown as an ornamental and likes full sun.
They are a poppy that makes a statement when put in a floral arrangement and they have large leaves of dark green that are saw toothed. The stems of the Flemish Antique are thick and strong to hold this large bloom and as the blooms die away they have a pod that is popular for drying.
The Flemish Antique is a hardy poppy that grows between 30 and 36 inches in height, and the plant has a spread of approximately 12 inches. This annual poppy can be grown in most climates with the right light and soil conditions and will reseed its self. They require little care after being planted when they have the right soil, light and water conditions and will bloom from early spring until fall. This is a poppy that is native to Western Europe and should be planted from seed and not transplanted. The plant is sensitive to freezes and the blooms are sensitive to light frost. |
