Poppy seeds are used in many kinds of foods, they are used to make poppy seed rolls, muffins, bagels and cakes. They can be found in bakeries and made at home by much of the population in many countries.

The poppy seed is a grayish black in color and has a sweet and nutty flavor when used in flavoring breads, rolls, bagels and cakes. There are approximately 900,000 poppy seeds in a pound, and they are obtained from the poppy known as Papaver somnife or the opium poppy. The seeds have been cultivated for more than 3000 years and used in foods. Although they come from the opium poppy seeds do not have the effects that the use of opium would, because they do not contain the alkaloids that are needed to produce opium.

The problem the seeds can create is when consumed in breads, rolls, or other foods should a person be given a drug test it can promote a positive result for opiates use. Even though the seeds contain none of the of opium, it is possible that some of the alkaloids have seeped in to the seeds through the membrane that separates it inside the pod.

Many of these drug tests have been changed to allow all a certain percentage of opiates to accommodate people that you consume foods with the poppy seeds so that they will not have a false positive test.
