There have been home remedies for thousands of years to treat all types of ailments, including sleep, stomach upset, pain and other types of illness. One of the chief uses was to treat insomnia, nervousness, hysteria and pain. In some cultures it was also used to bring down fevers and to cure coughs.

One of these is a home remedy for allergies, to treat allergies a tablespoon of poppy seeds was mixed with a teaspoon of water and a teaspoon of limejuice. This was applied to the area that was affected with an allergy rash.

In some countries poppy seeds were the one of the only ways they had to treat some ailments, along with other herbs and in India the crushed seeds were called khuskhus and was widely used for all types of ailments.

To cure blemishes of the skin a paste was made with khuskhus and milk to make a fine paste. This paste was used to rid the skin of blemishes and if used on a regular basis it would add a transparency to the skin tone.

The poppy seeds grinded into a fine powder and mixed with clarified butter was said to cure abdominal pain and prevent sciatica. The powder was mixed with water to stop the problem of diarrhea and to relieve insomnia.
