Poppy Growing Locations
Locations poppies are grown are far and wide between, as it can be grown in the United States, Canada, Europe, Britain, Asia and the Middle East. This is because the poppy can be grown in different climates and different soils, it requires less work than most plants making it an attractive plant to many gardeners. It is also a plant that grows each season because it is able too seed itself unlike many other plants.
There are approximately 200 species of the poppy ranging in size from 10 inches to 36 inches depending on the species. Which along with the other benefits of being able to grow in many locations makes it a perfect gardeners plant. One of the other reasons why the poppy is grown is for its opium, which is used for medicines and for illegal drug use. Illegal drug use brings in billions of dollars in countries that propagate these plants for their opium. There are some countries such as Afghanistan, which only grows poppies to be used mainly in drug trade and not for the beauty of the flower, or even for the benefit of the seeds and poppy oil.
For the gardener the plant has many different colors, which can be found in either deep hues or in pastels ranging from white, red, orange, yellow and even blue. There are also hybrids and some of these can be found in colors such as purple that is so deep it almost appears black and is a natural in the garden. |
