What Does A Poppy Look Like

While there are different types of poppy plants they each have one thing in common, they have one flower per stem, which can be in several different colors depending on which of the verities the poppy is from of poppy. There are approximately 120 different verities of poppy plants, which range from many garden verities to opium and the poppy used for seeds and oil. These colors the flowers can be found are red, orange, yellow, blue and white, these can be deep in shade or a pastel depending on which plant they are on.

The flowers are in a bowl shape with four to six petals, at the top of a long thin stem, the flower petals are crunched together tightly prior to opening and once open will begin to lie flat instead of bowl shaped prior to falling away from the plant. The leaves of the poppy plant are singular, they are short in length with rounded tips and they grow staggered long stem. The leaves are a dull medium green color and stop inches below where the flower is located.

These plants grow in fields and gardens; they have the ability to renew themselves annually by dropping seeds from their pods. While they have different times they bloom the poppy blooms in countries such as Canada and the United States are in late winter or very early spring. These of course are the garden variety poppy plants that can be found in many locations and not to be confused with the opium poppy.
