The Q In A To Z Poppies

The letter Q in A To Z poppies stands for the Queen poppy often referred to as the Drama Queen poppy and it also goes by the reference of Ladies Red Hat garden poppy. This poppy is one of the traditional poppies and is from the Papaver somniferum family.

The blooms of the Drama Queen poppy are unlike other poppy blooms they are a red and purple mixture, with saw toothed ends on the petals. The saw toothed edge is a deep red and mid way changes to a deep purple with long lavender and white stamens. The stem and leaves are a gray green in color with narrow leaves with dog eared edges.

Where they are similar to the other species of poppies is in planting, they are an easy plant to grow in the garden with rich well draining soil they require little other care. This is one of the poppy family that likes full sun and during dry times during the season watering will keep them blooming.

Taking the dead blooms off the plants will promote more blooms. This poppy is an annual that will reseed its self and grow between two and three feet in height. These are a poppy that can be planted in the spring or in the fall, when planting in the fall as the ground warms in the spring they will germinate and from germination to bloom is approximately 14 weeks.
