Red Poppy Coin

The red poppy coin is a way of honoring veterans of past wars in Canada and there have been plans put in place to mint a new coin to honor the veterans, which will be red in color. This coin is iconic of the Red Poppy flower Canada choose as their flower of remembrance and to celebrate the 94th anniversary of Armistice Day.

The official plans for this unique coin in circulation will be to mint 11 million of the $.25 color poppy coins. There will be exclusive locations where this one will be distributed to honor the men and women who fought between 1914 and 1918, which amounted to 650,000 Canadians. There were over 66,000 and women who gave their lives and 170,000 would be wounded during this war.

Lieut. Col. John McCrae who was a medical officer during the First World War is held responsible for the poppy being used, as a symbol of remembrance, for it was he that wrote In Flanders Fields as a way of honoring the soldiers of all countries.

The profits from the $.25 colored poppy coins are placed in the Legions Dominion Command, poppy trust fund which helps provide financial aid to Canadian veterans and their dependents.

The coins follow the many years that an artificial poppy has been used to honor the veterans of World War I for which the proceeds have been used to care for veterans and their families. The coins unlike the artificial poppy can be saved and passed from family member to family member.
