The poppy species Dendromecon rigida Benth grows as a tree or large shrub reaching ten feet in height when it is mature and has the ability to grow six feet in height in two years under the right conditions. Another of these poppy trees is Romneya coulteri, also known as the Matilija poppy, this tree grows to between four and six feet in height. This poppy tree is native to California and has flowers that resemble the peony. The flowers can reach between four and six inches in diameter, they have the appearance of crepe and they have six to twelve blooms on each stem. One of the most interesting facts about this tree is its pods that make miniature birdcages. This poppy is also one that has a perfumed smell being similar to the primrose in odor. This tree blooms from the end of June through the beginning of September.
