Poppies and the Wizard Of Oz

The poppy plant has been so popular throughout history that it has found its way into gardens, the pattern on dishware, in paintings and many other places including one of the most popular movies of all time the Wizard of Oz.

In the Wizard of Oz was a scene with Dorothy, the scarecrow, the lion and the tin man before they reach the city of Oz where they walk through a field filled with poppy plants and these poison flowers made them fall into a deep slumber. The ones most affected by the poppy field were Dorothy and the lion, while the scarecrow and the tin man tried to keep them moving toward the city of Oz.

This along with several of several other scenes in the movie had been a part of the wicked witches plan to keep them from reaching the city.

The movie, which was made in 1939, portrayed the poppies as poison because; the effects of the opium were known. Unlike they had been years for when they were popular to use for all types of ailments. In the past the poppy was known for its opium and was used to make a tincture known as laudanum, this was often prescribed to be used as a remedy for sleep. While the poppy flower could not cause tiredness this was what was alluded to in the Wizard of Oz when the four travel through the field of poppies.
